5 Minutes With Steven Frischling (Fish)

McCool Travel is excited to present tips from travel experts in our 5 Minutes interview series featuring travel industry giants, super frequent travelers, and adventurous persons. It has been over two years since the previous travel expert profile and this fun feature is long overdue.
For the latest profile, I am thrilled to present Steven Frischling (aka Fish). I was initially exposed to Fish through Twitter chats, where his quirky humor shines. He is a globe hopping professional photographer and airline emerging media consultant working with large global airlines. Fish has racked up more than 1,000,000 miles since he started to track his mileage in 2005. Fish’s travel tends to be less than leisurely—including flying from New York to Basrah, Iraq, for six hours; Hong Kong for eight hours, Kuwait City for two hours and traveling around the world in 3.5 days to shoot a series of photo assignments in 4 cities and 4 countries on 3 separate continents.
He regularly blogs about travel topics at Flying With Fish under the Boarding Area collection.

Hometown
I grew up at the end of JFK Airport’s Runway 22L but now reside in New London County, on the Connecticut Shoreline, with my three kids, for the past decade.
Always in my luggage…
Noise canceling headsets, typically a pair of drum sticks, and a Boba Fett head.
3 favorite home-away-from-home places…

  • My Mom’s couch, which is the most comfortable place you’ll ever sleep
  • the front seat of my truck, usually with my dog Zero
  • any big window in an airport terminal

A favorite travel memory is…
Going around the world for work, shooting assignments in Philadelphia, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, and Incheon, and only being gone 3.5 days.
3 favorite travel brands…

3 money-saving travel tactics I use are…
I am wicked cheap:

  • if less than 8-10hrs between flights, I just sleep in the airport rather than stay in hotels
  • eat in lounges and on flights to save money
  • fly red-eye flights to avoid paying for hotels

3 ways that I have fun while traveling are…
I love to travel, but I rarely get to go do things, so my fun is a bit weird.

  • I love to watch security, I spend hours at a time watching and studying airport security
  • I like to help other travelers in the airport, those who need help are usually easy to spot
  • I love to seek out and try new BBQ

8 word (or less) travel mantra…
“The Point Of The Journey Is Not To Arrive”
My favorite non-travel website…
Are we counting National Geographic as non-travel? If not, The Economist.
most memorable souvenir …
I rarely if ever pick up souvenirs, but I’d have to say a map of the London Underground’s Piccadilly Line that was ummm … shall we say … borrowed, from the train.
favorite cheap eat …
Dirty water hot dogs, street kabobs, and shawarma.
recent discovery …
That there is far more to do around where I live in Connecticut than I ever imagined.
I am fortunate to have met …
The list is long, I don’t even know where to begin.
I would like to meet …
I honestly don’t know, I’ll tell you when I meet them.
Thank you, Fish, for sharing your thoughts with McCool Travel and may you have countless more memorable travel adventures!
