11 Convenient and Top Blacksburg Hotels Near Virginia Tech

Consider these convenient Blacksburg hotels for a place to stay when attending Virginia Tech football games, visiting your student in Blacksburg (or Radford), or just exploring this gorgeous area of Virginia. After many visits to Blacksburg, Virginia—my son was a student at Virginia Tech (which won “most satisfied students” honor)—I have experienced a wide variety of Blacksburg hotels and lodging options.

Blacksburg, Virginia, besides being the home of Virginia Tech, is a vibrant, small college town, nestled in an area of incredible natural beauty. The Blacksburg area is an ideal stop during a New River Valley adventure (Appalachian Trail, waterfalls, rafting, fishing) or as a break along a scenic Blue Ridge Parkway drive or on the way to Shenandoah Valley. There are several nearby wineries and Mountain Lake (Dirty Dancing was filmed there) is 30 minutes away.

Top Blacksburg Hotels and Lodging Near Virginia Tech

1. The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center

As the only public lodging option on the Virginia Tech campus, the Inn at Virginia Tech is highly desired by university parents and guests but should be on every traveler’s list. It is a full-service hotel, with onsite fine dining, a premiere conference facility with 700 seat ballroom, and fitness center.

The Director of Sales and General Manager at The Inn at Virginia Tech told me that all visiting ACC basketball teams stay here—so you might see some budding superstars strolling through the lobby on your next stay. The Inn has a total of 147 rooms and three executive suites (with a living room and wet bar).

McCool Travel tip: families can book connecting rooms, a king room for the parents connecting to a room with two double beds for children.

2. Beliveau Farm

Beliveau Farm is a magnificent 165 acre property with an award-winning boutique winery and luxury B&B, located in the Catawba Valley about 12 miles from Blacksburg and 25 miles from Roanoke. The area is pure bliss, as surrounding properties are several hundred acres, marked for conservation, and cannot be developed. The sight lines are unobstructed by power lines (nice!).

The property owners are an absolute delight to be around. Yvan Beliveau is a professor emeritus at Virginia Tech—formerly head of the Head of the Building Construction department in the School of Architecture. Yvan is a master craftsman and grew up on a 700 acre farm in North Quebec (without electricity until he was a teen). He explained to me that Old World European architecture is gorgeous and ornate while most building styles are merely functional.

Yvan handled the renovation and construction of the buildings here, incorporating his passion into design intricacies I did not notice until he pointed them out. Heated bathroom tile is one of my favorite special touches. The B&B has five grand suites with interlocking hardwood floors throughout.

His wife Joyce manages the inn, winery, and estate, overseeing a dozen employees. She is a retired counselor and they met at University of Vermont. In August I stumbled upon Beliveau, during a scenic drive along Catawba Road (highly recommended), and splurged on the Chocolat Room—with a great deck for watching the potent storm that night. As I left the next day, several Virginia Tech professors and employees arrived for an offsite corporate retreat. Joyce told me that they have hosted filming parties and bands, in addition to many groups.

McCool Travel tip: because caves are prominent underground in this area, mosquitoes are practically non-existent.

3. Inn at Riverbend

Our family stayed at the Inn at Riverbend about 10 years and my wife and I returned this past weekend, during Virginia Tech parents weekend. The inn is on a hill in Pearisburg, Virginia, about 30 minutes northwest of Virginia Tech, overlooking the New River; ironically, the New River is the oldest river in USA and second oldest in the world.

The Inn at Riverbend is a Select Registry property with seven guest rooms; all rooms have direct access to the balcony and overlook the New River. A variety of drinks are always available, and fresh cookies are baked daily—both are very handy. The inn has a Tesla charging station, which I hope to use next trip (anyone want to let me use their Tesla?).

One guest at breakfast said the sheets were the most comfortable she had ever slept on and Jeanne, one of the owners, pointed out that they sell them. Pretty cool.

McCool Travel tip: they offer Specials for Virginia Tech parents—”stay 9 nights, 10th night is free.”

5. Primland

Located in Meadows of Dan, about 90 minutes from Blacksburg, is an exceptional luxury mountain resort called Primland. Located only six miles from Blue Ridge Parkway and encompassing 12,000 acres, Primland offers a plethora of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, RTV, hiking, and a remarkable mountain golf course (unique because it is on top of the ridge, looking down into a canyon). The Primland Lodge is LEED certified and the golf course is Audubon certified. After all your outdoor adventures, relax in the spa and rest at a magnificent tree house or cabin room overlooking the canyon. 6. The Martha Washington Inn and Spa

Although Martha Washington and George Washington never stayed here, The Martha Washington Inn has hosted several US presidents and celebrities. Retaining much of its historic past, the nearly 200 year old building offers modern luxury amenities. Dip into the outdoor stone hot tub and indoor salt water pool, later enjoy a glass of port (free for each guest) on the front porch facing the Barter Theatre, USA’s longest-running professional resident theatre. The Martha is a member of the Historic Hotels of America and a AAA 4 diamond rated property.

Located only a few steps from the Birthplace of Country Music museum, The Hotel Bristol is a fun and convenient boutique hotel in Southwest Virginia. Also check out their rooftop terrace bar and Vivian’s Table on the ground floor (excellent oysters!).

More Suggested Blacksburg Hotels

The following are Blacksburg Virginia area chain hotel properties where I have personally stayed. I provide just a information snippet since quality is largely consistent with other brand locations.

  • Holiday Inn Express & Suites. Blacksburg Holiday Inn & Suites is conveniently located, less than a half mile from the Virginia Tech campus. McCool Travel tip: compared to many Blacksburg hotels in the area, this is a great choice because the suite layout (separate living area with sleeper sofa) is ideal for families.
  • La Quinta, Radford. The hotel seemed new about 5 years ago. It has a fitness center and substantial breakfast.
  • Best Western, Radford. A dated hotel with very large rooms. Wifi worked well. Breakfast was boring and insufficient.
  • Econo Lodge, Christiansburg. Basic value lodging located close to I-81. I have stayed here a couple of times for $35 a night.
  • Days Inn, Christiansburg. I used a Hotel Coupons discount and would only return if there were no other available lodging options.
