5 Minutes With Dave Briggs of Daves Travel Pages

For McCool Travel’s 140th travel interview, I am pleased to introduce you to Dave Briggs of Dave’s Travel Pages—one of the oldest online travel brands. On a recent trip to Nepal (yes, Nepal), I joined eight other travel professionals on a five day mountain trek on the Annapurna Circuit. Dave was the fittest person in our group but also the most humble and happy. I asked him one day about his longest cycling trip. He said, like it was nothing, “oh, 18,000 kilometers.” Amazing!
Dave Briggs‘s bio: “Adventure cyclist Dave Briggs has cycled from England to South Africa, Alaska to Argentina, and Greece to England, among other travel adventures. Along the way, he’s been a grape picker in Greece, nightclub doorman in Sweden, and worked on a farm in Canada. Nowadays, he can be found either riding a bicycle in remote parts of the world, or tapping away at a keyboard creating posts for his travel blog Dave’s Travel Pages, which has been established since 2005.”

Hometown …
Northampton, England – currently living in Athens, Greece
Always in my luggage …
A powerbank. I sometimes even remember to charge it before I leave!
3 favorite home-away-from-home places …

  1. My tent – On occasion, it is more my constant home than a home away from home
  2. New Zealand
  3. Any Greek beach

A favorite travel memory is …
Meeting these guys during my cycling trip from England to South Africa. They showed my a handy little shortcut through the bush to the next village!

3 favorite travel brands …

  1. Craghoppers – They used to make some very good travel shirts. They still produce one or two good ones now, but you need to check them more carefully.
  2. Endura – They make the Humvee ¾ cycling shorts that I wear on all my cycling trips. Hard-wearing shorts that last for years!
  3. Stanforth Bicycles – I’ve tested out two of their bicycles so far on long distance cycling trips, and am due to test a third out in the summer of 2017.

3 money-saving travel tactics I use (before trips) are …

  1. Use a water filter – Not only does it save money from buying bottled water, but it also reduces the amount of plastic I use.
  2. Camp – By using free-camping in addition to other forms of accommodation, I have reduced my travel costs on long distance cycling trips to less than £10 per day.
  3. Cook for myself – It’s easy to do when you are camping!

3 ways that I have fun while traveling are …

  1. Ask random people for directions – the results are always hilarious, as it’s surprising just how many people in the world have no idea where they are in relation to the next town or village in their own country.
  2. Drop by a dodgy looking bar – Although I no longer drink, dropping by the town’s dodgiest looking bar or pub is always great fun. You get to meet all sorts of characters!
  3. Say yes when people suggest things to do – It always leads to fun!

  1. Hi Charles,
Dave is an interesting dude! Fearless, fit, and I love to follow his blog. Ditto for saying “yes” to fun situations, and to life. And yes, even to very uncomfortable but freeing situations. That’s when all the interesting stuff happens. Thanks for sharing 🙂
    Ryan
