5 Minutes With Nicolette Orlemans

For McCool Travel’s 126th travel profile, I am happy to introduce you to Nicolette Orlemans. She is another travel influencer I have known online for years and was thrilled to meet her at a travel show last year. She co-hosts the fun and inspirational Twitter chat, #CultureTrav.
Nicolette Orlemans‘s bio: “Nicolette Orlemans grew up in a multicultural, bilingual home in The Netherlands to a Polish mother and a Dutch father. She is currently based in New York City, where she works as a social media and content manager. When she’s not working, Nicolette loves to travel. Nicolette is the founder of culturewithtravel.com, and host/founder of #CultureTrav, a Twitter chat that focuses on how travelers personally experience travel—adapting to cultural differences, bridging any language gaps, creating new homes as expats, and much more.”

Hometown …
Oss, The Netherlands
Always in my luggage …
A book or my Kindle with multiple books, a small notebook and pen to write down impressions/thoughts/ideas, headphones to listen to a podcast or music!
3 favorite home-away-from-home places …

  1. Krakow, Poland
  2. Barcelona, Spain
  3. Cairo, Egypt* I’m including Egypt though I’ve only been once, because it’s the most interesting country I’ve visited to date. When you’re there, you’re experiencing “living” history, which is incredible!

A favorite travel memory is …
Being able to go inside the pyramids in Giza seeing the hieroglyphs first hand. It’s an experience that would be difficult to replicate, and I remember that I was in awe of it as a child.
3 favorite travel brands …

  1. AirBnB
  2. Kayak/Momondo
  3. Travel+SocialGood, an important travel organization propelling the travel industry toward greater (social) good.

3 money-saving travel tactics I use are …

  1. Staying with friends/family or using AirBnB
  2. Making home-cooked meals during a trip, while also eating local cuisine
  3. Jumping on travel deals, especially if some flex time works! As a part-time traveler, I need to maximize the time!

3 ways that I have fun while traveling are …

  1. Aiming for total immersion. What fun is it to only go with “what you know” and not dive deeper?
  2. Mixing up activities. I crave variety in the day-to-day activities, whether that means hiking/biking, walking around urban areas, enjoying beach time, etc.
  3. Relying on local expertise. Locals can have fun perspectives and insights to share. Why not ask them?

8 word (or less) travel mantra …
Immerse yourself in culture, conversation, history, and adventure
favorite non-travel website …
Twitter! I love making new meaningful connections on there, and talking to our #CultureTrav community!

most memorable souvenir …
Photographs are the best souvenirs, and serve as reminders of great travel memories with loved ones!
favorite cheap eat …
Stroopwafels (Dutch thin waffles)! They’re delicious, and so addicting. 😉
recent discovery …
Skyscanner! I know, I know! It’s been around, but a fellow traveler recommended it, and I’m really enjoy using it so far!
I am fortunate to have met …
Jessica Lipowski! She’s not only a wonderful and welcoming co-host on #CultureTrav (and an awesome person to work with overall), but also has become a good friend!

I would like to meet …
Even more travelers, or those who appreciate travel at any level (no matter how frequently they can go)! It’s always fun to hear new insights and perspectives on travel. I love how we can travel to the same destinations, but our experiences can vary so much. That’s the beauty of travel!

Thank you so much, Nicolette, for taking a few minutes to share travel inspiration and tips.
