5 Minutes With Jeremy Scott Foster

For McCool Travel’s 76th travel interview, I am pleased to present Jeremy Scott Foster. Jeremy operates travelFREAK.net, inspiring people to quit their jobs and seek out adventure, meet strange people, and learn about new cultures. Jeremy has created a lifestyle which suits his strengths, creativity, and freedom to do and roam.
Without further ado, here’s the travelFREAK:
Jeremy’s bio:
“Jeremy left home in 2010 to embark on a journey to the other side of the world. Years later, he’s still on the move and exploring other countries. He is now a traveling cocktail bartender and the head writer for travelFREAK! You can usually find him on either side of the bar, acting wanky and pretentious about booze.”

Hometown…
Hey there! I’m originally from Boston, but I left almost exactly five years ago [ed. interview responses are from late March 2015] to travel and explore the world. Now that my family is more spread out all over the place, I don’t visit Boston nearly as much as I probably should—I love it there.
Always in my luggage…
This is a tough one! I don’t actually travel with very much stuff, to be honest (want to know what’s in my bag? I’m a pretty simple and straightforward kind of traveler. My iPhone has been my saving grace on more than one occasion, and it’s become an absolutely essential tool for me. I get lost more than I like to admit, so Google Maps holds a very special place in my heart.
3 favorite home-away-from-home places…

  1. Wellington, NZ
  2. Beijing, China
  3. New York City

A favorite travel memory is…
One!? Just one!? What a crazy request 😉 Just yesterday I hiked to the top of the Pichincha Volcano in Ecuador and I can guarantee you that it’s going to remain in my list of favorites for the rest of my life. It was a grueling hike (rock climbing and all) through hail, wind, fog, sleet, and snow, but the views from 15,000 feet were so breathtaking I literally shed a tear.
3 favorite travel brands…

  1. Right now I’m loving my new bag from MindShift Gear
  2. I also love researching flights with Adioso
  3. I always keep my data backed up while I’m traveling with Backblaze

3 money-saving travel tactics I use are…

  1. Being insanely flexible with my flight dates, and always browsing for flights in incognito mode.
  2. Use the Charles Schwab High Yield Checking account to avoid paying ATM fees anywhere in the world.
  3. Work in hostels for free accommodation. You’ll have to stay for a few weeks, but if you’ve got an open schedule, there’s no reason not to!

3 ways that I have fun while traveling are…

  1. beer
  2. tequila
  3. whisky

8 word (or less) travel mantra…
Go
most memorable souvenir…
The relationships I’ve had and the friendships I’ve made.
favorite cheap eat…
Right now? Rice and beans!
