5 Minutes With Mike Shubic of Mikes Road Trip

For McCool Travel’s 141st travel interview, I am pleased to introduce you to Mike Shubic of Mike’s Road Trip. I recently attended two conferences—in Alabama and in Nepal—and Mike spoke about video at both. In Nepal (I am still amazed to say that), Mike and I talked road trips, video, travel business, and more.
Mike Shubic‘s bio: “Mike Shubic is an award-winning travel writer and seasoned road trip travel video blogger. He takes his readers on a first-hand journey with him as he travels the world one road trip at a time. Mike has been publishing MikesRoadTrip.com for over seven years and has worked with the Travel Channel, USA Today, Yahoo Travel, and is currently a Gnomad for Travelocity. Mike also has his own ROKU channel and later this year his content will appear on DirecTV as they roll out a new streaming technology. The road is his page. The experiences are the ink. Next chapter begins in 300 miles, so stay tuned. ”

Hometown …
Born in Seattle, dried out in Phoenix.
Always in my luggage …
iPad—movies, books and music help pass the time. Plus, I also use it to operate my drone.
3 favorite home-away-from-home places …

  1. San Diego (I’ve lived here a couple of times and my two sisters live there)
  2. Page-Lake Powell, AZ – love camping and exploring Northern Arizona
  3. Seattle during the summer, when it’s not raining, it’s a fantastic city!

A favorite travel memory is …
Meeting the reigning Pinball Champion (a real pinball wizard), who was a retired NBA player on an airplane. We really hit it off during the flight, so he invited me to his house (more like a compound) a week later for a party he was throwing. It was a casual pizza, beer, and video game party with about 50 of his male friends. The game room was bigger than most professional arcades. It was a blast! Super nice guy!

3 favorite travel brands …

  1. Travelocity
  2. TripIT
  3. NatGeo

3 money-saving travel tactics I use (before trips) are …

  1. When traveling abroad, use the ATM at the destination airport, never convert money from a currency exchange.
  2. Try not to eat, buy, or stay right in the heart of an area, if you walk just a couple blocks away you can often save a lot of money.
  3. Use a mileage credit card throughout the year to help fund your vacation.

3 ways that I have fun while traveling are …

  1. talk with locals
  2. get outside the tourist areas
  3. get lost exploring

8 word (or less) travel mantra …
Try everything once, twice if ya like it!

favorite non-travel website …
YouTube
most memorable souvenir …
I rarely buy souvenirs, but something I bought on my first trip to Europe was a bouquet of wooden colored tulips from Holland.
favorite cheap eat …
The best cheap eat I can remember was in Bangkok. I found a place that served a half fresh pineapple where they scooped out the fruit, diced it up with some grilled veggies and chicken, then placed it back in the half pineapple and I think it was around $2.75.
recent discovery …
I just returned from Los Cabos, Mexico, while there I road tripped north toward Todos Santos, where the famed Hotel California is located. There, I discovered a newly opened gastronomic experience called Jazamango. This is an amazing restaurant situated in the middle of a small farm. Most everything they use is grown right there, or obtained from the sea just a short distance away.
I am fortunate to have met …
I am fortunate to have met so many amazing people along the way. One of my travel idols is Samantha Brown, whom I got to meet at TBEX Huntsville. She is just as charming in person as she is on camera. As illustrated in her keynote, she is an amazing storyteller. She had everyone captivated.
I would like to meet …
I would like to meet Anthony Bourdain, that guy just exudes coolness.
