Road Trip Travel: Summer Foods

Some vivid highlights of summer revolve around glorious road trips and delicious summer foods. Below are some amazing summer foods—from ice cream to incredible BBQ and fluffy biscuits—experienced on McCool Travel road trips—from Massachusetts to Virginia to Tennessee and North Carolina.

Road Trip Travel: Summer Foods

summer foods: fresh biscuit, West End Bakery, West Asheville, NC
road trip treat: fresh biscuit, West End Bakery, West Asheville, North Carolina

This biscuit was practically a meal in itself, but, of course, I also bought a chocolate eclair or doughnut. If I remember correctly, lunch was light that day.

summer foods: Wine and Snacks, Arrington Vineyards, Arrington, TN
road trip stop: Wine and Snacks, Arrington Vineyards, Arrington, Tennessee

Loved this setting. You can see the view from the swing here. I bought a bottle of wine and had a glass with my own snacks. attn winery owners: more vineyards should have swings like this.

summer foods: Jack's BBQ, Nashville, TN
Tennessee summer food: Jack’s BBQ, Nashville, Tennessee

The three meat platter from Jack’s BBQ in Nashville. Yum! What I remember is that Jack’s had the best sauces I remember from any BBQ joint. A couple of other pictures of Jack’s are here.

summer foods: refreshing Stewart's Key Lime Soda.
refreshing Stewart’s Key Lime Soda

Stewart’s Key Lime Soda is a great drink to try with various summer foods. I try to have one (but only one) of these each summer. I leisurely sipped this soda in the peaceful courtyard of the Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

summer foods: Due South BBQ, Christiansburg, VA

The food is wonderful but I liked this picture of the sauce containers.

summer foods: Gardner's ice cream, Christiansburg, Virginia
delicious ice cream: Gardner’s ice cream, Christiansburg, Virginia

Not the best ice cream I had this summer—but the best ice cream I had that day!

summer foods: sausage biscuit, Daylight Donuts, Cleveland, TN

I learned that grape jelly is the acceptable topping for sausage biscuits. Who knew? I certainly did not. I love learning new things, especially about authentic food.

summer foods: Taqueria Albertos, McMinnville, TN
amazing tacos from Taqueria Albertos, McMinnville, Tennessee

These may have been the best tacos I have had outside of California. That is high praise l because I love tacos! Get this—they were only 99 cents each. Honestly, I would plan another road trip just to visit this food truck again.

summer foods: lobster roll, Leominster, MA

I had a few lobster dishes this summer but this is the only picture I could find.

summer foods: incredible ice cream, Cherry Hill, Lunenburg, MA
incredible ice cream, Cherry Hill, Lunenburg, Massachusetts

My go to ice cream flavor from Cherry Hill is the chocolate peanut butter cookie dough. It is the BEST flavor I have ever had. I got a Small size. The other two are Kiddie sized. This place has huge servings.

summer foods: more ice cream, Cherry Hill, Lunenburg, MA

On another trip to Cherry Hill, I tried the Black and Tan flavor. Chocolate peanut butter cookie dough is still my favorite but it is worth trying other flavors. You know, just to confirm.

summer foods: Lost Creek Winery, Leesburg, VA
summer road trip funness: Lost Creek Winery, Leesburg, Virginia

Another winery visit, another “trying to be artistic” picture. How did I do?

summer foods: sinful eclair, Donut Friar, Gatlinburg, TN
summer treats: sinful eclair, Donut Friar, Gatlinburg, Tennessee

This was the second eclair I have had from Donut Friar. Seeing this picture will trigger some stomach rumbling dreams. This would be in my top 5 eclairs in the USA—but note that I have not tried them ALL.

Tell me some of your favorite summer foods and summer drinks.

  2. That lobster roll looks amazing, and I noticed the ice cream place in Lunenberg must be really good since you have two pics of it. Definitely a great ice cream destination in Central Mass!

  4. Things I look forward to enjoying in the summer months are fresh fruits and vegetables, like home-grown tomatoes, squash, watermelon and cantaloupe. My favorite summer drink would be a nice glass of rose´wine, or a non-alcoholic cranberry/club soda spritzer with fresh lime.
