Travel consumers can choose from a dizzying array of lodging options for upcoming trips. Even within the luxury lodging category, ...
1. Shopped for the best rate on the company website
A friend recommended Country Inn & Suites for my stay in New Orleans. The best rate for one night using Country Inn & Suites was $86.
2. Entered a group rate code
I selected the option for a AAA rate. Sometimes I use a different group rate, whether it is an organization (such as Costco) or other special code. The website returned a AAA rate of $79 ($7 savings).
3. Checked the rate for a two night stay
In case I decided to stay for two nights, I wanted to know if there was a discount. Indeed there was; a 20% discount off the AAA rate. For a two night stay, the rate was $63.20 ($23 savings per night).
4. Looked at the Entertainment rate.
Anyone can go to entertainment.com and look for discounted hotel rates. Their rate for Country Inn & Suites was $55.30 ($31 savings per night).
5. Use a discount certificate.
I usually buy an Entertainment discount book each year for my local area. It includes 2-for-1 dining and other discounts. In each Entertainment book there is a mail-in rebate certificate. After my hotel stay I can get a $30 rebate ($15 per night). My effective rate is reduced to $40.30 ($46 savings per night).
From the initial quoted rate of $89, I found a lower AAA rate (saving 9%), followed by a discounted 2 night stay (27%), and finally a non-published but available to anyone who knows rate (38%). When my rebate is issued, I will ultimately save 55%. These steps do not work for every hotel stay but will apply to many. Happy travel deal hunting!
