Tacky Tourist Attractions

Who doesn’t love a tacky tourist attraction?

Last week I did a quick road trip to and from Knoxville, Tennessee (rest in peace, Uncle Ray).

Checking out of my hotel, the brochure rack caught my eye. I generally look through the brochures anyway, whether or not I have plans.

In this case, my only plan was to drive straight home. I did not really have time for side trips.

But oh what wacky tourist attractions this area has. My cousins grew up in Gatlinburg and Knoxville so I know it is a fun destination.

Here are a couple of brochures that caught my eye:

I have actually been to Dollywood:

Hmmm, I thought this lake is in New Hampshire.

This has to be my favorite one. Interestingly, I have an aunt that is a Hatfield descendant. My surname is almost the other side.

What is your favorite tacky tourist attraction?

The amusement park in Vienna, Austria is one of mine. I still get a kick from seeing on one ride, “Das ist ein job für Superman.”

I like the Mystery Spot outside of Santa Cruz, CA. It’s tacky, sure. But also strange and mysterious. You know it’s a trick, some sort of visual illusion, but that doesn’t negate the fact that you are seeing things that should not be! The Mystery Spot has a trailer park charm that is a must see for me.

Thank you, Ron. Even though I lived in that area for a few years, I did not visit the Mystery Spot. I will have to get back there to see it.
